Trace was a Dutch progressive rock trio founded by Rick van der Linden in 1974 after leaving Ekseption. The band was formed in 1974 and released its debut album, "Trace," in 1974.
The band's music was characterized by complex arrangements and intricate instrumental work, and their compositions often featured a mix of rock, jazz, and classical influences.
Trace released a total of three albums during their career. Trace was fairly popular in Europe, and they gained a loyal following among fans of progressive rock.
However, they never achieved widespread commercial success and disbanded in the late 1970s, merging back into Ekseption.
Despite this, the band's music has continued to be appreciated by fans of progressive rock.
The members of Trace all have an impressive pedigree but you can tell more or less what the story was here. These guys saw what ELP were doing, they saw how successful they got doing it, and figured, "hey, we could do that".
Which they actually could. Rick van der Linden is a total phenom on the keys and Pierre (his second cousin) can almost play faster than Palmer could.
What they were missing was a guy like Greg Lake, who could sing and write songs - without that, they didn't really have any commercial potential.
They don't actually have a singer at all - just Rick yelling "EEEEYAAA!!!" a few times. But I think for some of us that may be a good thing. Sometimes with music like this singing just gets in the way and lets face it, you listen to this shit because you're just addicted to crazy organ and whirlwind drumming.
Which is what you get for like...70% of its runtime. Big highlights include "Gallarde", which is absolutely insane; "The Escape of the Piper", "Progression", and perhaps the drum solo in "The Lost Past".
I do admit there are parts where you kinda miss having a guy like Lake around; I'm not really sold on the moments where they try to be pretty.
And not having another sort of texture to use means Rick really has to get creative to produce different sounds on this; he's credited with bagpipe and vacuum cleaner, among a dozen other things.
So I guess it's truly one for the junkies. But man. They really don't make 'em like this anymore. A lot of modern prog bands do imitate the ELP sound, but very few could truly sound as wild as Emerson.
