September Morn is the thirteenth studio album by the American singer-songwriter Neil Diamond. Released in 1979, the album includes a disco version of the Motown song "Dancing in the Street" and a remake of "I'm a Believer".
On September Morn, Neil Diamond began to push the borders of easy listening, concentrating more on immaculately polished studiocraft than songcraft.
The songs are quite inconsistent, and even the best songs -- "Dancing in the Street," "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore," "Stagger Lee" -- are given inappropriately stiff and colorless arrangements.
The title track nearly reaches the adult contemporary heights of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers," but overall the record demonstrates little personality.
A good portion of the songs on September Morn are either written by industry songwriters or cowritten with them. While the title track is great, the majority of the memorable tracks on there, such as "The Shelter of Your Arms" or "The Good Lord Loves You", were not written by Neil.
Largely he sounds like he was dragged into the studio to put this together and really wished he was somewhere else. It was during this time that he was working on the movie version of You Don't Bring Me Flowers, which ultimately never materialized and instead led to him starring in the 1980 remake of The Jazz Singer.
The quality of the movie aside, at least it lit a bit of a fire under him and moved him away from this schlock - at least briefly. Unfortunately, though, September Morn pretty much represents the final nail in the coffin of the Neil Diamond everyone loved, and set up a pattern of one or two truly good songs per album surrounded by forgettable tunes.
It was a trend that would set in for the next three decades of his career, no matter how great he still was live.
