The Hues Corporation - I Caught Your Act (1977) (Vinyl Lp) – €10,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

Although the Hues Corporation helped launch disco's earliest strivings with the 1973 smash "Don't Rock the Boat," by the time the end of the decade rolled around, the band was merely playing catch-up with the rest of the pack.
The band was fully locked into the soft disco sound that flooded the market, and it was a sacrifice.
By surrendering so completely to what had become a marketable sound, the band relinquished the excellent harmonies and arrangements of their earlier material.
That change stripped the band of much of their strength.
This is extremely evident across I Caught Your Act.
The songs are well paced and make all the right noises, but pale in comparison not only to their peers on the scene, but also to the band's own catalog. That said, however, there are some nuggets here as well.
The melancholy "I Can't Put My Finger on It" pulls a sweet melody out of its bag, while the title track has energy enough to stand tall on its own.
"Ali Baba's Got the Blues" must be one of the most underestimated and understated songs in the history of popular music. An ordinary album track on a less known album.
It would, in fact, bring the band back into the charts -- barely -- scraping into the R&B charts at number 61 in May 1977.
This is not a great album; it's not even necessarily a good album.
And certainly in light of the cohesion this band had at the beginning of the decade, its flaws are even more pronounced.
The album is a minor release recommended mostly for dedicated soul completists. It trades the group's distinct early identity for commercial conformity, resulting in a standard, middle-of-the-road 1970s pop record.

Tom Kimmel - 5 To 1 (1987) (Vinyl LP) - €10,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

Tom Kimmel (born Thomas Eugene Hobbs II in 1953) is an American singer-songwriter and poet.
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Kimmel grew up largely in small towns in south Alabama. He attended public schools and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1975.
Kimmel is known as a songwriter, and his compositions have been recorded by many popular artists, including Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Linda Ronstadt, Joe Cocker and Randy Travis.
His songs have also been featured in television series including Miami Vice, Touched by an Angel and Dawson's Creek — and in films including Twins, Runaway Bride and Serendipity.
"That's Freedom", the lead track on his "5 to 1" album, was co-written by Kimmel and reached #64 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1987
The song was later covered by Australian singer John Farnham, reaching #6 in the Australian charts in late 1990 and going Gold there, as well as charting well in parts of Europe.
This is such a terrific album - there really isn't a bad song on this record.
Then again, there are several songs on this album that simply were overlooked.
Since Tom was an unknown, Polygram just didn't seem to support this record. Songs like "Shake" just ooze airplay.
A really well written (if not a tad cheesy) ballad called "A to Z" which - especially in 1987, was as good a ballad as anything else out there at the time and yet another track that begs for airplay.
It continues - "Tryin' To Dance' was a single and did indeed chart on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts for a bit, but it was another lost song.
Overall, a really strong album that got lost in the shuffle in 1987.

Side one
1.  That’s Freedom - 4:15
2.  Shake - 4:15
3.  Tryin’ To Dance - 3:16

2.  On The Defensive - 3:56
3.  Violet Eyes - 3:35
4.  No Tech - 2:32
5.  5 To 1 - 6:13

Los Lobos - … And A Time To Dance [EP] (1984) (Vinyl EP) – €10,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

...And a Time to Dance is a 1983 EP by Los Lobos. It was co-produced by T-Bone Burnett and Steve Berlin (not yet a full-time member of the band) and was the band's first release on Slash Records.
The EP brought the band its first wide acclaim. It was voted best EP of the year in the Village Voice's influential Pazz & Jop critics poll.
Critic Robert Christgau gave the record an "A−" in his Consumer Guide, calling it "good old rock and roll East L.A. style."
Trouser Press raved about "a spicy romp (in two languages) back and forth across musical borders few can traverse with such ease," while Rolling Stone called it "an infectious dance record that deserves to be heard by rock fans."
1983's ...And a Time to Dance wasn't Los Lobos' first record, but if you lived outside of East Los Angeles, chances are excellent that you'd never crossed paths with a copy of their self-released debut album (Del Este de Los Angeles (Just Another Band from East L.A.)) before this EP hit the racks. At only seven songs, ...And a Time to Dance didn't give the group the space to present more than a quick once-over of their eclectic musical range, but it did make it clear that this was a really great band, with the kind of chops, intelligence, and maturity that can come from a decade of woodshedding. And on ...And a Time to Dance, not only was the band having a great time playing "spot the genre" with their audience, they were crossbreeding styles and coming up with great sounds all their own: the straight-up rock & roll of "Let's Say Goodnight" is fortified with a strong dose of Tex-Mex fire thanks to David Hidalgo's accordion, the bluesy swing of "Walking Song" gets a spring in its step from a fleet-fingered jazz guitar line, and the two traditional numbers in Spanish both burn with the high spirits and hot tempos of a potent rock & roll band. And it's hard not to love a song like "How Much Can I Do?," in which a guy tries to prove his love to his wife by promising to lay off cheap wine and nights out at the nudie bar.
If ...And a Time to Dance didn't quite make clear Los Lobos were one of America's truly great bands, it did make clear they were a lot of fun and a force to be reckoned with, and that's quite enough of a message to pass along in seven songs.
The track "Anselma" won the first Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American Performance.

Biddu Orchestra - Rain Forest (1976) (vinyl Lp) - €5,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

Biddu Appaiah (born 8 February 1945), known mononymously as Biddu, is an Indian-British singer-songwriter, composer, and music producer who composed and produced many worldwide hit records during a career spanning five decades.
Considered one of the pioneers of disco, Euro disco, and Indian pop, he has sold millions of records worldwide, and has received an Ivor Novello award for his work.
He has been ranked at number 34 on NME’s “The 50 Greatest Producers Ever” list.
In 1976, Biddu produced his own “Rain Forest” LP, credited to Biddu & His Orchestra.
This album "Rain Forest" earned him four Ivor Novello Awards, including the “Songwriter of the Year” award.
Combining swishy disco instrumentals with the composer’s own Eastern influences, the album proved to be another foray into danceable pop as the title track comes on strong, leaving the rest of the set to unfurl like so many leaves.
And it did indeed score Biddu his second U.K. hit single — just inching into the Top 40 in April, with the catchy “Chic-Chica-Chic-Chica-Chic” hovering just behind. With the quiet “Laura,” “Wings of Love,” and “Trippin’ on a Soul Cloud” rounding things out, alongside his cover of the My Fair Lady staple “I Could Have Danced All Night,” Biddu may not have recaptured his “Summer of ’42” glory, but he surely sounded like he had fun trying.
Although the composer’s style can be hard to handle, and while his songs sometimes stumble, his ideas sowed the seeds that grew into the (much) later trend of Indian influenced dance music.
Easier on the palate for fans than for band-wagoneering aficionados, Rain Forest nevertheless takes its rightful place in the often eccentric British disco scene.

Peter Allen - Taught By Experts (1976) (Vinyl Lp) - €7,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

“Taught by Experts” is the fourth studio album by Peter Allen, released in 1976.
It spawned the hit “I Go to Rio”. The album featured such musicians as Thom Rotella, Jerome Richardson, Lesley Gore and Dusty Springfield.
Sounding like a cross between Neil Sedaka and Billy Joel, without the Top 40 appeal of those voices, Peter Allen certainly seemed like a man who was much too Broadway for the pop charts he helped Olivia Newton-John, Melissa Manchester, and Christopher Cross climb.
His version of “The More I See You” is a safe remake, but a Chris Montez cover of the tune from the 1945 Betty Grable film has the charm.
This version did get adult contemporary airplay in 1976, and features Herb Alpert on trumpet, Jim Gordon on drums, Carole King’s ex-husband, Charles Larkey, on bass, Bostonian Alan Estes on percussion, and even labelmate Lesley Gore on backing vocals.
Bobby Rozario’s orchestration is lovely, but what needed to happen here was to have Lesley Gore duet with the singer.
Peter Allen was just too overbearing for a world where even Barry Manilow at his most ostentatious could wink and get away with it.
The other problem with this album is the production by Brooks Arthur, the same dilemma Lesley Gore’s Love Me by Name album suffered at the hands of Quincy Jones — a term producer Jimmy Miller called overproduction.
Mr. Miller often said there is no right or wrong in production, but there was half a wink when he said that. At the top of his game he may have brought Peter Allen’s vocals down a bit in the mix of “Harbour” and let the music swell.
A beautiful composition by the singer, his vocals are so far out in the mix that the elegance is totally drowned out.
Where Ronnie Milsap would get away with being loud on a song like “Harbour” is where Allen ventures — and succeeds — on the title track, “Taught by Experts.”
This is blues/schmaltz/pop/cabaret, and it is the best track on the record with its fatalist view on love: “better you get hurt than me.”
It’s a professor of love teaching love that is tough. The late Peter Allen had an army of friends to help him: Carole Bayer Sager co-wrote four of the six songs on side one, Adrienne Anderson another, while the vocalist composed most of side two.
“Quiet Please, There’s a Lady on Stage” is, no doubt, for his ex-mother-in-law, Judy Garland. It’s the singer with just his piano for the first couple of verses, and it is also a highlight, but the voice — again — is so far out in the mix that the excellent musicianship doesn’t have the opportunity to buoy the singer/songwriter.
Sure, he’s got great pipes, and sure, these are a bunch of pros executing the music with absolute precision.
What was needed was a bit more soul and a lot more breathing room for the parts.
Sometimes artists on this level get too sure of themselves, and some kind of perspective seems lost during the recording of Taught by Experts.
The album includes Peter Allen’s staple, “I Go to Rio,” and as a testament to his life in the business.

Wild Bill Davis & Buddy Tate - Midnight Slows Vol.2 (1976) (vinyl LP) - €5,00

posted  by ad-vinylrecords

George Holmes "Buddy" Tate (February 22, 1913 – February 10, 2001) was an American jazz saxophonist and clarinetist.
Wild Bill Davis (November 24, 1918 – August 17, 1995) was the stage name of American jazz pianist, organist, and arranger William Strethen Davis.
He is best known for his pioneering jazz electric organ recordings and for his tenure with the Tympany Five, the backing group for Louis Jordan.
Prior to the emergence of Jimmy Smith in 1956, Davis (whom Smith had reportedly first seen playing organ in the 1930s) was the pacesetter among organists.
"Midnight Slows Vol.2" is a 1972 soul-jazz album by organist Wild Bill Davis and saxophonist Buddy Tate, released on the French Black and Blue label.
It features a warm, late-night swing and blues session, emphasizing laid-back grooves, with some releases featuring additional artists like Milt Buckner.
"Midnight Slows Vol.2" is considered an excellent example of 1970s European-produced mainstream jazz, emphasizing the bluesy, swing-based capabilities of its veteran performers.

Carlos Santana / Mahavishnu / John McLaughlin - Love Devotion Surrender (1973) (vinyl Lp) - €5,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

Nina Hagen + Band - Unbehagen (1979) (vinyl LP) - €5,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

"Unbehagen" is the second studio album by Nina Hagen Band, released in 1979 by CBS Records. It is the last album released by the band, before Nina Hagen decided to pursue a solo career.
The band kept on performing under the name Spliff.
The album produced three singles, “African Reggae”, “Herrmann hiess er” and “Auf’m Rummel”.
“Herrmann hiess er” deals with drug addiction and is believed to be about Hagen’s ex-boyfriend Herman Brood.
An accompanying music video was also released.
The album also contains a German cover version, “Wir leben immer… noch”, of Lene Lovich‘s hit single “Lucky Number“.
The song “Wenn ich ein Junge wär” was recorded live in April 1979 at the Saarbrücken Congress Hall.
The Album “Unbehagen” (which means discomfort or unease), was produced with the band recording their tracks in Berlin and Hagen recording the vocals in Los Angeles.
The other band members went on as the band “Spliff”.
Meanwhile Hagen´s public persona was steadly creating media uproar and she became infamous for an appearance on an Austrian talk show called Club 2, in which she simulated masturbation.
She also acted with Dutch rocker Herman Brood and singer Lene Lovich in the movie “Cha Cha”.
The album was a chart success and was certified Gold in Germany in 1981.

Missing Persons - Spring Session M (1982) (Vinyl Lp) - €7,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

“Spring Session M” is the debut studio album by American rock band Missing Persons.
It was released on October 8, 1982, by Capitol Records.
The title of the album is an anagram of the band’s name.
Produced by Ken Scott with the songs written by Terry Bozzio, Dale Bozzio, and Warren Cuccurullo, Spring Session M is a new wave rock album with elements of synth-pop.
Although it got lost in a flood of new romantic/new hairstyle dross at the start of the ’80s, there is far more substance to Missing Persons’ official debut, Spring Session M, than the likes of A Flock of Seagulls or Classix Nouveaux could ever hope to muster.
Sure, there were cheesy synthesizers aplenty and a slick production that threatened to strangle the band’s melodic flair, but in singer Dale Bozzio, Missing Persons had a natural star.
Bozzio’s sugary hiccup vocal style was both alien and alluring, going on to inform the styles of bands like No Doubt, theStart, and the Sounds. The pivotal song on the album — the title of which is an anagram of the band’s name — is “Walking in L.A.,” which became a minor hit on the back of the group’s glossy magazine visibility.
Four singles were released from the album: “Words”, “Windows”, “Destination Unknown”, and “Walking in L.A.” All singles charted on the Billboard Hot 100, with “Words” and “Destination Unknown” both reaching #42, and the music videos also received regular airplay on MTV.

"Inner City Front" is the eleventh full-length album by Canadian singer/songwriter Bruce Cockburn, released in 1981 by True North Records.

Inner City Front continues the urban toughness that moved to the forefront on Bruce Cockburn's previous release, Humans.
Furthermore, like that record, there's an uneasiness that runs throughout, from the jazz-tinged opener, "You Pay Your Money and You Take Your Chance," to the disquieting "Loner," which closes the album.
Even a love song like "Wanna Go Walking," one of the most straightforward rockers he's ever recorded, reflects the weight of the outside world.
Only the jazzy instrumental "Radio Shoes" and the joyful "And We Dance" remain free of this underlying tension.
Musically, moody synths, violin, and woodwinds on Inner City Front underscore the dark, reflective nature of the material, which like its predecessor, deals with the "paradox and contrast" in the human condition, from personal relationships to world affairs.
Also, for the second consecutive recording, Cockburn eschews the folkier, acoustic leanings of his '70s work and places both feet squarely into the jazz and worldbeat rock that dominated the majority of Humans.
One track, "The Strong One," is even given a slow, brooding, techno treatment.
Since the release of In the Falling Dark, Cockburn was gaining creative momentum with each release, and Inner City Front continues that trend.

Steeley Span - All Around My Hat (1975) (vinyl Lp) - €10,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

"All Around My Hat" is a 1975 album by Steeleye Span, their eighth and highest-charting; it reached number 7 on the UK Albums Chart, and stayed on the chart for six months.
It was produced by Mike Batt, who also produced their follow-up album Rocket Cottage. It briefly made the band a household name in the UK. In the United States it became the band’s first album to chart, reaching number 143.

They sound like would-be competitors to the Who on the opening bars of “The Wife of Usher’s Well,” with Bob Johnson‘s electric guitar grinding out power chords like nobody’s business.
The vocals have their usual elegance, the harmonies soaring exquisitely, but between the choruses the guitar puts out lots of wattage. The guitar competes with Maddy Prior‘s voice for dominance on tracks like “Hard Times of Old England,” “Bachelor’s Hall,” and “Dance with Me.”
There’s some more traditional-sounding material here, including the lovely “Cadgwith Anthem” and “Gamble Gold (Robin Hood),” where the group returns to acoustic instruments.
A single of the upbeat title track also made the charts in England, and the overall sound was the work of producer Mike Batt, who gave the band a raw, stripped-down style, with only the smallest touching up and the very lightest of overdubbed strings.
The title track was edited to just over three minutes long for single release and became their highest-charting single, reaching No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart, with “Black Jack Davy” as its B-side.
In 1976 an edited version of a second track from the album, “Hard Times of Old England“, was issued as a single, but did not chart.
The song “Dance with Me” is a version of a Scandinavian ballad, “Herr Olof och Älvorna“.
The album cover and back was designed by John O’Connor, a friend of the band’s guitarist Tim Hart, using an anamorphic projection that distorted the facial features of the band members but which looks correct when viewed from the side through special pinholes in the lyric sheet.

Al Jarreau - Look To The Rainbow - Live In Europe (1977) (vinyl 2Lp) - €20,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

Alwin Lopez "Al" Jarreau (12 March 1940 – 12 February 2017) was an American singer and musician.
He received a total of seven Grammy Awards and was nominated for over a dozen more.
In 1968, Jarreau made jazz his primary occupation.
In 1969, Jarreau and Martinez headed south, where Jarreau appeared at Dino's, The Troubadour, and Bitter End West. Television exposure came from Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, Dinah Shore, and David Frost.
He expanded his nightclub appearances, performing at The Improv between the acts of such rising stars as Bette Midler, Jimmie Walker, and John Belushi.
During this period, he became involved with the United Church of Religious Science and the Church of Scientology.
Also, roughly at the same time, he began writing his own lyrics, finding that his Christian spirituality began to influence his work.

In 1975, Jarreau was working with pianist Tom Canning when he was spotted by Warner Bros. Records. On Valentine's Day 1976 he sang on the thirteenth episode of NBC's Saturday Night Live, that week hosted by Peter Boyle.
Soon he released his critically acclaimed debut album, We Got By, which catapulted him to international fame and won an Echo Award (the German equivalent of the Grammys in the United States).
A second Echo Award would follow with the release of his second album, Glow. In 1978, he won his first Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for his album, Look To The Rainbow.

"Look to the Rainbow" is a live album by Al Jarreau, released on May 27, 1977 by Warner Bros. Records. It marked a breakthrough for his career in Europe and later also in the US.
In 1976 Jarreau made his first live appearances in Europe, starting with concerts at the jazz festivals in Montreux and Berlin.
The following year he began his first tour through 16 cities in Europe starting with a gig at Onkel Pö's in Hamburg. Look to the Rainbow is a set of recordings from that tour.
The title song "Look to the Rainbow" is from the musical Finian's Rainbow, a Broadway production from the late 1940s.
The most recognized song on this album is Jarreau's interpretation of Paul Desmond's classic jazz number "Take Five", which was also released as a single in an edited version in 1977.
Look to the Rainbow is a jazz-oriented album which is characterized by a unique light and open sound. With no guitar or brass instruments, accompanied by Tom Canning's Fender Rhodes (in some places supported by an ARP String Ensemble) and Lynn Blessing's vibraphone, Al Jarreau's voice is the main lead instrument and he uses it intensely as such.
